The Adriatic coast and Dalmatian islands: Korčula as a threshold landscape

In Europe, Lastovka is strongly associated with the Dalmatian Adriatic (Croatia), where olive growing unfolds across coasts, islands, and terraced slopes. The island of Korčula is one of its clearest territorial anchors: here, the cultivar becomes part of the local agricultural identity, shaped by stone, wind, and light.

An “island-rooted” profile: continuity farming on poor, shallow soils

Its presence points to an olive culture built through continuity rather than rapid expansion: small plots, dry-stone walls, thin and stony soils, and careful stewardship of both tree and land. In these settings, the variety reads as a territorial response—able to support cultivation where soil is scarce and every agronomic decision matters.

Within TGoP: a Europe-rooted cultivar with a clear local identity

For the Gardens of Peace, Lastovka is a “rooted” European cultivar (minimal migration): its value is not in crossing continents, but in showing how olive growing can build landscape and culture by remaining faithful to a specific place. It is a lesson in measure—local roots, coherent practices, and long-term recognizability.

Agronomic and commercial considerations: Medium hardiness variety with high rhizogenic capacity. It is also a self-compatible, with an early flowering and late ripening. Productivity is high and constant. The fruits has a high removal force and gives a medium oil yield of approximately 20%. The variety is considered resistant to cold.
