02 Nov Zaragoza joins the Garden of Peace project
Today, November 2, an agreement was signed between the association The Garden of Peace, the City Council of Zaragoza, and The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (CIHEAM Zaragoza) to create a Garden of Peace in this wonderful city. The Mayor, Mr. Jorge Azcón Navarro, organised the event in the magnificent building of the municipality in the presence of the media and where, in a press conference, all the details concerning the implementation of this project were given. Zaragoza has been declared an ‘Emblematic Site for the Culture of Peace’ by UNESCO. The letter conferring the award emphasises that ‘The city of Zaragoza, as a crossroads of different cultures, symbolises a spirit of tolerance and interculturalism that is indispensable for the development of a culture of peace’. A perfect marriage therefore between the spirit that fuels The Garden of Peace project and the city of Zaragoza. An important part in this agreement is played by the CIHEAM Zaragoza, where its director Mr. Raúl Compés López, one of the signatories to the agreement, has worked hard to ensure that The Garden of Peace is realised in this city. The CIHEAM Zaragoza is one of the four institutes of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). The CIHEAM is an international intergovernmental organisation founded in 1962 and composed of 13 member states (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey). Its purpose is to promote multilateral cooperation in the Mediterranean region in the fields of agriculture, food, fisheries, environment and natural resources and rural development through specialised training, research, development projects and policy dialogue, with the aim of providing knowledge and technological capabilities to meet the needs of member states. As President of The Garden of Peace Association, I sincerely thank the Mayor of Zaragoza and the Director of the CIHEAM for believing in this project and for making this historic and emblematic city part of this golden thread that unites the cultures of the Mediterranean under the shade of the tree of peace.
