Introduction

The Garden of Peace association is thrilled to present an initiative driven with dedication and altruism by the Sanctuaire de la Faune de Tanger. The writer, Laura Formentini, author of this article (whose CV is available at the end of the article), has wholeheartedly committed to this project, involving the TGoP association. Upon the completion of the sanctuary’s restoration, the aim is to create a Peace Garden, seamlessly integrating it into the network of gardens that the TGoP association develops globally.

Welcome to a groundbreaking sanctuary project in Tangier, Morocco, known as the Sanctuaire de la Faune de Tanger (SFT). Positioned as the largest animal sanctuary in the country, SFT is envisioned as a unique environment where animals and children can mutually learn and grow, fostering deep compassion for all living beings. Our initiative includes programs aimed at helping both children and adults reconnect with their inner child, all while being supported by a distinguished network of global educators. This marks a new era for animals and children in Tangier, where our core mission is to cultivate a world filled with empathy, healing, and unwavering mutual respect.

Our Objective

SFT is dedicated to transforming the approach to animal and child welfare in Tangier, a city where the culling of stray animals used to occur on a consistent basis. Thankfully, now the authorities have mandated the cessation of the culling of the tagged dogs, marking a significant step forward. Our sanctuary serves not only as a response to past inhumanity but also as a beacon of hope, advocating for TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccination-Return), compassion, and the joy of living in harmony with all beings. By aligning with these new mandates, SFT aims to further solidify and expand upon this progress, ensuring that the compassionate treatment of stray animals becomes a sustained and integral part of our community’s fabric. Through education, advocacy, and direct action, we are committed to redefining the relationship between the city’s inhabitants and its animal population, fostering an environment where every living being is valued and protected.

Our Method

Through the renovation of the sanctuary, incorporating 21 experiential pathways and culminating in an oasis of 21 olive trees, we are creating a unique environment for healing and learning. The final oasis consisting of 21 different varieties of olive trees from 21 countries is realised in cooperation with the international association The Garden of Peace.

This space will offer:

  • Interactive and educational activities involving animals, nature, music, and art.
  • Therapeutic programs for emotional and psychological healing.
  • Workshops aimed at instilling a deep respect for life and the environment in our community.

Our programs are designed to reignite imagination, foster empathy, and build lasting bonds between humans and animals.
