Introduction to the “Olivares Monumentales de Andalucía” Association

The “Olivares Monumentales de Andalucía” Association is a nonprofit organization based at the Municipality of Cogollos de la Vega. It brings together four municipalities in the province of Granada: Algarinejo, Cogollos de la Vega, Íllora, and Órgiva. The association also includes the participation of four extra virgin olive oil (AOVE) producer cooperatives: Aceites “Flor de la Alpujarra,” Cooperativa Agrícola “San Antonio” of Cogollos Vega, Almazara “Casería de la Virgen” of Alomartes, and Aceites Algarinejo SCA-ORODEAL, along with the Regulatory Council of the “Poniente de Granada” Designation of Origin.

Objectives of the “Olivares Monumentales de Andalucía” Association

The Association pursues various fundamental objectives. Firstly, it promotes public awareness of the “Monumental Olive Heritage of Andalusia” with the aim of preserving the agro-environmental surroundings, conserving ancient olive varieties, and recovering the associated historical and agro-industrial heritage. Furthermore, it aims to create a Collective Brand that identifies centennial and monumental olive trees, providing public visibility to agri-food products and tourist-cultural services related to traditional centuries-old olive groves.

It organizes “Olive Growing Dissemination Days” in the associated municipalities, addressing various topics of interest such as the environment, health, gastronomy, and olive grove tourist routes. It also works to raise awareness among farmers about the conservation of centennial olive trees by providing them with appropriate technical and economic support. A noteworthy initiative is the development of modern traceability systems to ensure the authenticity and origin of oil from centennial olive trees, using specific software and historical aerial photographs. Furthermore, the Association is committed to promoting research through Research and Development projects in collaboration with universities and other technological entities, with the aim of deepening the relevant aspects for the valorization and protection of centuries-old olive trees. The “Olivares Monumentales de Andalucía” Association represents a reference point at the regional, national, and international levels. Don Manuel Lucena Sánchez is the current president of the “Olivos Monumentales de Andalucía” Association.
